Construction

ERW fittings are formed from electric-resistance-welded pipe — economical for general and medium-pressure duty. Seamless fittings have no weld seam and a more uniform wall, giving higher integrity for high-pressure, high-temperature and critical service (typically Sch. 40 / Sch. 80).

Plain end — bevelled on site

Our locally-made MS, GI and seamless fittings are supplied with plain (square-cut) ends. The weld edge is bevelled on site only when a full-penetration butt weld is specified by the welding procedure — keeping the supplied fitting versatile for fillet or full-penetration welds.

Heavy-duty guidance

Fire-fighting & high pressure

The maximum pressure point in a line is at the fitting. For fire-fighting headers and high-pressure mains we advise heavy-duty (heavier-wall / seamless) fittings — a fitting heavier than the straight pipe protects the joint. Standard ERW suits general medium-pressure lines.

What are butt-weld pipe fittings?

A butt-weld pipe fitting — also written butt weld, butt welded, butt welding, buttweld or BW fitting — is a steel fitting joined to the pipe by welding the two ends together, end to end, to make one continuous, permanent, full-strength joint with a smooth uninterrupted bore. Because there is no thread or socket to restrict flow, butt-weld elbows (bends), tees and reducers carry the highest pressures and temperatures and are the standard for larger-bore steel pipework. Our locally-made MS, GI and seamless fittings are supplied with plain (square-cut) ends; the weld edge is bevelled on site only where a full-penetration butt weld is specified by the welding procedure.

How butt-weld differs from forged fittings

  • Butt-weld (BW): welded end-to-end — full-bore, full-strength, permanent. Best for large bore, high pressure / temperature.
  • Socket-weld: pipe inserted into a socket and fillet-welded — small-bore high-pressure lines.
  • Threaded (screwed): joined by thread, removable — small-bore, low-pressure, serviceable lines.
  • Rule of thumb: butt weld for large-bore permanent mains; socket-weld / threaded for small-bore connections.

Advantages of butt-weld fittings

A butt weld develops the full strength of the pipe across the joint, with no thread or socket to leak or restrict flow. The result is a smooth bore (low turbulence and pressure drop), excellent resistance to high pressure and temperature, and a long, maintenance-free service life. For permanent, code-compliant pipework, butt welding is the industry standard.

Installing butt-weld fittings

Prepare & fit-up

Clean and inspect the ends, align the fitting to the pipe, and — where a full-penetration weld is specified — bevel the edge on site and set the root gap to the WPS.

Tack & weld

Tack to hold alignment, then weld by qualified welders to a recognised WPS/PQR. Use the matching filler and process for the grade.

Heat-treat & test

Carry out PWHT where the code requires it, then inspect the joint (visual / NDT) and hydro-test the line before commissioning.

Technical note: our fittings ship plain end (square-cut), not pre-bevelled. The bevel is a site weld-preparation step performed only when a full-penetration butt weld is called for — so the same stocked fitting suits both fillet and full-penetration joints.

What is the difference between butt-weld, forged, socket-weld and threaded fittings?

Butt-weld fittings are welded end-to-end into the pipe run for a permanent, full-bore, full-strength joint — best for high pressure, high temperature and larger diameters. Socket-weld fittings insert the pipe into a recessed socket and fillet-weld it — used on smaller-bore high-pressure lines. Threaded (screwed) fittings join by thread and can be dismantled — used on small-bore, low-pressure and serviceable lines. "Forged" describes how socket-weld and threaded fittings are made (from a solid billet). As a rule: butt weld for large-bore permanent mains, socket-weld/threaded for small-bore connections.

What is a "bend"? Is it the same as a butt-weld elbow?

In Indian trade parlance a "bend" and an "elbow" are generally the same item — a butt-weld fitting that changes the direction of the pipe, usually through 90° or 45°. We stock short-radius and long-radius bends (elbows) in MS ERW, GI and seamless carbon steel. Strictly, "elbow" is the short-radius pressed fitting and "bend" can mean a longer-radius item, but buyers use the words interchangeably — tell us the angle and radius and we will supply the correct part.

MS vs CS vs GI vs SS-304/SS-316 butt-weld fittings — which should I choose?

MS (mild steel) ERW fittings are the economical workhorse for general and medium-pressure lines. CS (carbon steel) seamless fittings have a heavier, seamless wall for high-pressure and high-temperature process and steam service. GI (hot-dip galvanised) adds a zinc coating for corrosion resistance in water and outdoor duty. SS-304 suits food, water and mild-chemical service, while SS-316/316L adds molybdenum for marine, coastal and chemical (chloride) environments. We stock all of these so you can match material to fluid, pressure and budget.

What is the difference between ERW and seamless butt-weld fittings?

ERW fittings are formed from electric-resistance-welded pipe and are cost-effective for general and medium-pressure service. Seamless fittings are made from seamless pipe with no weld seam and a more uniform wall, giving higher integrity for high-pressure, high-temperature and critical applications. Both are offered as butt-weld (BW) elbows, tees and reducers; seamless is typically specified to Sch. 40 / Sch. 80 wall thickness.

Are these butt-weld fittings IBR-approved?

No — the butt-weld fittings on this page are our standard MS, CS, GI and stainless range and are not supplied as IBR-approved. IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) approved fittings are a separate certified range for boiler and high-pressure steam service, supplied with the required Form III-C certification. The weld edge is bevelled on site only when a full-penetration butt weld is specified by the welding procedure — bevel angle and root gap are then prepared to suit the WPS. This keeps the supplied fitting versatile for either fillet or full-penetration welding.

Should I use heavy-duty or medium fittings for fire-fighting and high-pressure lines?

For fire-fighting headers and other high-pressure service we advise heavy-duty (heavier-wall / seamless) butt-weld fittings. The fitting is usually the highest-stress point in a pipe run — the maximum pressure point in a line is at the fitting — so specifying a heavier fitting than the straight pipe protects the joint.
