Methodology

Where the numbers come from

Bolt diameter and count follow the drilling of each standard: BS 10:1962 Tables D, E, F, H, J and K (inch bolts), ASME B16.5 Class 150, 300, 400 and 600 (inch bolts), DIN 2501 drilling for PN10, PN16, PN25 and PN40 flanges (metric bolts; note that EN 1092-1 differs at some sizes, e.g. DN65 PN16 has 8 holes under EN and 4 under DIN) and IS:6392 Table 17 (metric, matching DIN PN16). Every record carries a verification status: verified where two independent published tables agree, standard where it is taken from a single published table, and indicative for uncommon tables and sizes (Table K, the odd-inch BS 10 sizes, BS 10 Tables D/E above 20") where you should confirm with us before ordering.

Fastener system. BS 10 holes are drilled for inch (BSW) bolts; in India the nearest metric size is commonly supplied as a substitute and passes through the same holes, but it is a different thread with a different nut. The tool therefore asks you to pick one system and computes nut height, washer, spanner and length for that system only — it never presents an inch size and a metric size as equal. ASME flanges are inch only; DIN and IS flanges are metric only.

Length. For ASME Class 150, 300 and 600 raised-face joints the stud length is the figure published in ASME B16.5 (1/16" raised face for Class 150/300, 1/4" for Class 600, standard gasket, two heavy hex nuts), adjusted only when you add washers or change the gasket, and rounded up to the next ¼". Everywhere else the length is built up: flange thickness + mating thickness + gasket + washers + nut height (ISO 4032 metric, BS 1083 Whitworth, or ASME B18.2.2 heavy hex) + three thread pitches of projection, rounded up to the next standard length (5 mm steps to 80 mm, 10 mm above; ¼" steps for inch). Studs get two nuts and two projections. Wafer valves add the valve face-to-face length and a second gasket. Ring-joint (RTJ) facings are not covered.

Flange thickness is the figure published in our Flange Identification Tool for the plate flanges we supply; both thicknesses in the joint can be overwritten with the figures from your drawing, and a flanged valve or equipment connection uses one loose flange plus the body flange thickness you enter.

FAQs

Flange nut bolt questions

How many nut bolts does a flange need?

One bolt per bolt hole. The hole count is fixed by the flange standard and size — a 6" BS 10 Table E flange has 8 holes, so a joint of two flanges needs 8 bolts, 8 nuts and (if used) 16 washers. The tool shows the count for every flange it covers.

What size nut bolt fits a 6" Table E flange?

8 bolts of ¾" (M20 metric equivalent). For two Table E flanges with a 3 mm gasket the suggested hex bolt length is about 2½" (65 mm); add washers or a thicker gasket and the tool recalculates.

Does the nut bolt size change with the pressure table or class?

Yes. The same nominal size uses larger and more bolts as the rating rises. A 4" flange takes 4 × ⅝" in Table D, 8 × ⅝" in Table E, F and H, and 8 × ⅞" in Class 600. Always pick the fastener from the flange's own table or class.

How is the bolt length worked out?

ASME raised-face joints use the stud lengths published in B16.5, adjusted only for washers or a non-standard gasket. BS 10, DIN and IS joints are built up: both flange thicknesses + gasket + washers (if used) + nut height + three thread pitches of projection, rounded up to the next standard length; studs get two nuts and two projections. Both thicknesses are editable, and a wafer valve's face-to-face length is added.

Hex bolt or stud bolt — which should I order?

BS 10 and IS/DIN joints in India are usually assembled with hex bolts and nuts. ASME B16.5 practice, especially Class 300 and above, generally uses stud bolts with two heavy hex nuts. The tool offers both and adjusts length and nut count.

Are BS 10 bolts inch or metric?

BS 10 drilling is in inches (½, ⅝, ¾, ⅞, 1"). In the Indian market the nearest metric size (M12, M16, M20, M22, M24) is commonly supplied as a substitute and passes through the same holes, but it is a different thread with a different nut — not an equivalent. The tool lets you choose the fastener system and works out nut, washer and length for that system only.

Can I get the flanges, nut bolts, washers and gaskets together?

Yes. Enter the number of joints and the tool builds the complete list, which you can copy or send to Vijay Sales Corporation on WhatsApp as one enquiry.
