What is SS 304 Stainless Steel?

SS 304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel grade, containing approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It is the workhorse of corrosion-resistant industrial piping — offering good strength, excellent formability, and reliable resistance to a wide range of process media. The low-carbon variant (SS 304L) is preferred where pipes are welded in service, as it resists intergranular corrosion at the weld zone without requiring post-weld solution treatment. Jindal SS 304 pipes are produced to ASTM A312, the international specification for austenitic stainless steel pipes used in high-temperature and corrosive environments.

Properties of Jindal SS 304 Pipes

Jindal SS 304 pipes are stocked in both ERW (electric resistance welded) and seamless construction. ERW is more cost-efficient and is the default choice for general process service at moderate pressures. Seamless has no longitudinal weld, making it preferred for high-pressure boiler feed lines, IBR-grade applications, and hygienic services where weld seams are not acceptable.

Both variants are available in Schedule 10, Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 wall thicknesses, sized from ½" (15 NB) up to 16" (400 NB). Typical applications include chemical and pharmaceutical process lines, food and dairy processing (where 304's smooth surface and oxidation resistance support hygienic standards), refinery and petrochemical service, demineralised and high-purity water systems, and IBR-certifiable pressure piping. Choosing the Right Schedule (10/40/80)

Schedule defines wall thickness for a given nominal bore, and therefore the pipe's pressure rating. Schedule 10 is thin-wall — the most economical option for low-pressure water lines, food and dairy applications, and gravity drains. Schedule 40 is the standard wall — appropriate for general industrial process piping at moderate pressures, and the most commonly stocked option for SS 304 chemical plant service. Schedule 80 is heavy-wall — used for higher-pressure applications, steam service, and where additional corrosion or mechanical allowance is needed.
