Butterfly Valve — Which Kartar Series?

Kartar offers four primary butterfly valve series, each suited to a different installation profile. The K-Line series (K701 and K702) is the workhorse — wafer-type with an integral liner and four lugs for proper bolt alignment, used across general water, HVAC and fire-fighting utility duty. The K-Line New series (K701N and K702N) is the same form factor with only two lugs, saving overhead weight where access is restricted or ceiling clearance is tight. The K-Line Replaceable Liner series (K703 and K704) keeps the same dimensions but with a field-replaceable liner — preferred where the maintenance team can access the valve for periodic liner change and where chemical or thermal duty accelerates wear. The K-Line CS Body (K713) is the cast-steel-body variant for steam, hot condensate, higher-temperature service, and projects where specifying authorities require cast steel rather than cast iron. The Aqualine (K706A/K707A) and Slimline (K706/K707) ranges are lighter-duty with reduced face-to-face dimensions — specified for tight installations where the standard wafer face-to-face won’t fit.

PN10 vs PN16 vs PN20 vs Class 150 — Pressure Rating Selection

Pressure rating selection should match the system’s design pressure plus a safety margin. PN10 (10 bar / 145 psi) is the right call for water mains at modest static heads, HVAC chilled-water circuits, fire-fighting risers in low-rise buildings, and most irrigation duty. PN16 (16 bar / 232 psi) — the most-specified rating in India — handles general process water, fire-fighting in mid- and high-rise buildings, sugar mill and cement plant utility lines, and any application where design pressure could touch 14–15 bar in service. PN20 (20 bar / 290 psi) is specified for higher-pressure water-hammer-prone pumping installations and steam-condensate service. Class 150 (American flange standard, ~19.7 bar / 285 psi) is specified on projects engineered in ANSI/ASME terms or where cast-steel-body butterfly valves are required.

Wafer NRV vs Dual Plate Check Valve — Quick Selection

The wafer single-plate non-return valve (K710) is the simpler and lower-cost option — suited to vertical-pipe applications and gravity-flow lines where reverse-flow events are infrequent. The dual-plate check valve (K711, available in both wafer and flanged versions) closes significantly faster than a single-plate design — because both half-discs close simultaneously, water-hammer pressure spikes are reduced markedly. The dual-plate is the right specification for pump discharge lines, fire-fighting mains downstream of a pump set, and any application where reverse-flow velocity is high. For pump suction protection specifically, the better choice is often Kartar’s CI/DI foot valve range (single-door, double-door, and DI ball-type) rather than an in-line NRV.

Liner Material — Nitrile vs EPDM vs Neoprene vs Silicone

Kartar butterfly valves are offered with four standard liner options. Nitrile (NBR) is the default — handles water, hydrocarbons, oils and most utility duty up to 80°C. EPDM is preferred for hot water, steam-condensate service up to 110°C, and chlorinated water applications, but should NOT be used with petroleum-based fluids. Neoprene is a balanced compromise — fair on chemicals, fair on hydrocarbons, used where exposure is mixed or uncertain. Silicone is specified for high-purity water (pharma, ultrapure), food-grade duty, and applications with higher operating temperatures. Size Range & Operation

Kartar butterfly valves are available from 40NB (1½″) through 600NB (24″). Valves 40NB through 150NB are typically supplied lever-operated as standard. From 200NB upwards, gear-operated is standard (and from 300NB up, gear is the default per the manufacturer). Pneumatic and electric actuators are available across the full size range from 40mm onwards — specify actuator type at order time, with separate Aqualine and Slimline series offering reduced face-to-face dimensions for installations where space is constrained. The standard face-to-face dimension (Dim A) at 100NB is 286mm for K701/K702; the Aqualine equivalent (K706A/K707A) is 180mm.
