The HFW Line-Pipe Process
Jindal (India) Limited rolls its tube by high-frequency welding (HFW/HFIW) from control-tested hot-rolled coil. Per the brochure, raw material is acquired as 100% specially-tested HR coil from SAIL, Tata Steel, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal and JFE. The line runs continuously through the following sequence.
- Coil preparation — HR/slit coil is uncoiled and roller-levelled flat.
- Coil joining & accumulation — a shear-end welder joins coil ends; a spiral accumulator lets the mill run without stopping.
- Edge milling & forming — strip-edge milling, then cage and fin-roll forming shape the strip into an open tube.
- Solid-state HF welding — the tube seam is welded by a solid-state high-frequency welder.
- Bead removal & seam annealing — internal and external weld bead is trimmed; the weld seam is annealed.
- Sizing for ovality — a rotary sizing mill brings the tube to size with minimum ovality.
- Cooling & cutting — air and water cooling, then a fly cut-off; cold-saw ends give bur-free finishing.
- End facing — ends are faced (and threaded-and-coupled or bevelled where specified).
- NDT — hydrostatic testing, plus weld and body ultrasonic testing.
- Inspection — works inspection and a customer inspection bench.
- Finishing — marking, rust-preventive coating or hot-dip galvanising, and coating (3LPE/3LPP/FBE/internal epoxy) where ordered.
- Weighing, bundling & dispatch — weighing and measuring, automatic bundling, then shipping.
