What grooved fittings are, and how the joint works
A grooved joint replaces welding and threading with a mechanical connection. A shallow groove is rolled or cut into each pipe end on site. A gasket is slipped over the gap between the two pipe ends, and a two-part housing closes around it. When the bolts are tightened, keys on the inside face of the housing drop into the grooves on both pipes and lock them together.
The gasket does the sealing and the housing does the holding, and the two jobs stay separate. That is why the joint behaves well under pressure: line pressure pushes the C-shaped gasket lip harder against the pipe wall, so the seal tightens as the system loads up rather than relaxing. No flame is involved, no threading machine is needed, and the joint can be taken apart later with a spanner.
Because a fitter can make up a joint in a couple of minutes with one wrench, grooved piping is now the default on fire sprinkler and hydrant systems, chilled water risers and plant-room headers — anywhere labour time, hot-work permits or later maintenance access matter.

Rigid or flexible coupling?
Both couplings use the same housing, gasket and bolts, and both seal the same way. The difference is the shape of the housing key. A rigid coupling (XGQT 1) has a key profile that grips the groove tightly on both sides, so the two pipes are held in line and cannot rotate or draw apart. Use it on risers, at valve and pump connections, and anywhere a designer has treated the line as a rigid structure.
A flexible coupling (XGQT 2) leaves a deliberate clearance between the key and the groove wall. That clearance lets the joint deflect a degree or so and take up a small amount of linear movement, which is what absorbs thermal expansion, pump vibration and seismic drift. On a long straight run, flexible couplings placed at intervals do the job that expansion loops do on a welded line. Where grooved piping is used
Fire sprinkler and hydrant systems
The largest single use. Grooved joints go in without a hot-work permit, which matters in occupied buildings, and mechanical tees let a fitter take a sprinkler drop off a main without cutting it. See grooved fittings for fire fighting systems.
HVAC chilled water
Chilled and condenser water headers move as they cycle between temperatures. Flexible couplings take that movement at the joint, and plant-room equipment can be isolated and pulled without cutting pipework.
Plumbing risers
Tall risers are quick to erect floor by floor, and the joint absorbs building settlement. Nothing has to be welded inside a finished shaft.
Industrial process lines
Where a line carries a slurry or an abrasive medium and sections need periodic replacement, unbolting a coupling is far cheaper than cutting and re-welding.
Mining and dewatering
Temporary and semi-permanent lines that get relocated. Housings and gaskets travel with the pipe and are reused.

What are grooved fittings?
Grooved fittings are ductile iron pipe fittings that join pipe by mechanical means rather than by welding or threading. What is the difference between a rigid and a flexible coupling?
A rigid coupling holds the two pipe ends firmly in line and allows no movement at the joint. A flexible coupling leaves a small clearance in the groove so the joint can deflect slightly and take up thermal expansion, vibration and seismic movement. Priced sizes run from 1" to 12" depending on the item. How quickly can material be delivered?
Stock items generally dispatch the same working day within Delhi-NCR. For a full project BOQ where some sizes have to come from the factory, allow one to two weeks from receipt of a firm order.
Which gasket should I specify for my service?
EPDM is the standard choice and covers water service from −34 to +150 °C, including hot water and many dilute chemicals. Nitrile handles petroleum products, oils and air with oil vapour from −29 to +82 °C but must not be used on hot water. Silicone covers dry hot air up to +177 °C.
