Grooved Fittings Dimensions & Technical Data — Roll Groove, Couplings, Gaskets
Every dimension table from the Sant grooved catalogue in one place: roll groove specifications from 1" to 20", coupling and elbow dimensions, mechanical tee hole-cutting sizes, gasket selection and bolt torques. Published by Vijay Sales Corporation for engineers, estimators and site staff.
Keep this page open on site. Check the first groove of every new pipe size against the master table, pull hole-cutting diameters before drilling for mechanical tees, and match the gasket compound to the service. Stuck against a BOQ line? WhatsApp 9999889008 with the drawing.
Roll groove dimensions
The master table. A groove cut outside these tolerances is the single most common cause of a leaking grooved joint, so it is worth checking the first groove of every new pipe size against this table before the crew runs on.

Gasket seat A tolerance ±0.76 mm / ±0.03 in; groove width B tolerance +0.76 / −0.03 mm. All figures as printed on folio 37/38 of the Sant grooved catalogue.
Reading the table. A is the distance from the pipe end to the near wall of the groove — the surface the gasket seals on, so it must be clean and free of scale. B is the groove width. C is the diameter at the bottom of the groove and is the dimension that actually controls whether the housing key seats. F is the largest flare the pipe end may have and still enter the housing. T is the minimum wall the pipe must retain.
Pipe O.D. to nominal bore — quick reference
Grooved fittings are ordered by nominal size but made to the pipe outside diameter. Where a nominal size has more than one O.D. in common use, both are listed — confirm which one your pipe actually is before ordering.

Coupling dimensions
Rigid (XGQT 1) and flexible (XGQT 2) couplings share one envelope. Φ is the outside diameter across the housing, L the overall length across the bolt pads, H the height of the assembled coupling.

Folio 05/06. The catalogue prints the same dimensional table for the rigid (XGQT1) and flexible (XGQT2) coupling; the difference between them is the housing geometry and the amount of angular and axial movement the joint allows, not the envelope size. Folio 07. The angle-pad coupling table repeats the same Phi / L / H envelope and bolt sizes as XGQT1 and XGQT2.
Which coupling to use where is worked through on grooved couplings — rigid vs flexible.
Elbow laying lengths
L is measured from the centre of the fitting to the end of the groove. Use it to set out a run before the pipe is cut.

Mechanical tee hole-cutting diameters
The hole cut in the run pipe for a mechanical tee or mechanical cross. Cut it to the diameter below; the tolerance printed in the catalogue is +3.2 / 0 mm (+0.13 / 0 in). Do not cut the hole on a weld line, and remove every burr before the gasket goes anywhere near it.

Folio 35/36. Hole diameter tolerance is printed as +3.2 / 0 mm (+0.13 / 0 in). The run column of the printed table also lists the pipe O.D. options for each DN; those are reproduced in the coupling and elbow tables above and are omitted here to keep the table readable.
Gasket selection
The gasket is the part that decides whether a joint survives its service. Pick the compound for the medium, not for the pressure — the housing takes the pressure.
Gasket compounds
Catalogue folio 35/363 sizes| Compound | Temperature range °C | Temperature range °F | General service recommendation | Colour mark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPDM | −34 to +150 °C | −30 to +302 °F | Hot water service within the stated range, plus dilute acids, oil-free air and many chemical services. UL classified to ANSI/NSF 61 for cold and hot potable water. Not recommended for petroleum service. | Green strip |
| Nitrile rubber | −29 to +82 °C | −20 to +180 °F | Petroleum products, air with oil vapours, vegetable and mineral oils within the stated range. Not recommended for hot water service. | Orange strip |
| Silicone rubber | −40 to +177 °C | −40 to +350 °F | High-temperature dry air and some high-temperature chemical products. | White |
Folio 35/36. The catalogue adds that gasket compound is selected for the medium being carried, and that other compounds can be supplied to order. EPDM is the standard supply and the right choice for fire water, chilled water and general plumbing service. Never put nitrile on hot water, and never put EPDM on a petroleum line.
Bolts, nuts and torque
Bolts and nuts are made from 40Cr or 35# steel and reach Gr. 8.8 mechanical properties after heat treatment. Only one wrench is needed to make up the joint.

Folio 39/40. The catalogue's caution: over-torquing can damage the bolt or the casting and lead to joint separation; under-torquing lowers pressure retention and bend-load capability and can cause leakage or separation. Rows for 3/4 in and 7/8 in bolts are printed with no value and are omitted.
Frequently asked questions
What are the roll groove dimensions for grooved pipe?
They vary by pipe outside diameter. For 2 inch (60.3 mm O.D.) the gasket seat A is 15.88 mm, the groove width B is 8.74 mm, the groove diameter C is 57.15 mm with a tolerance of −0.38 mm, and the minimum wall thickness is 1.8 mm. The full table on this page covers 1 inch to 20 inch as printed in the Sant grooved catalogue.
What size hole do I cut for a mechanical tee?
It depends on both the run size and the outlet size. A 4 inch run with a 2 inch outlet takes a 61 mm hole; the same run with a 3 inch outlet takes 86 mm. The hole-cutting table on this page lists all 39 run and outlet combinations, with a tolerance of +3.2 / 0 mm.
Which gasket do I use for hot water?
EPDM. It is rated −34 to +150 °C and is recommended for hot water service as well as dilute acids, oil-free air and many chemical services. Nitrile is specifically not recommended for hot water; it is the compound for petroleum products and oils up to +82 °C.
What torque do the coupling bolts need?
The catalogue specifies 30 to 45 lbs-ft (40 to 60 N·m) for 3/8 inch bolts, 80 to 100 lbs-ft (110 to 135 N·m) for 1/2 inch, and 100 to 130 lbs-ft (135 to 175 N·m) for 5/8 inch. Tighten alternately and evenly, and finish with even gaps between the two housing halves on both sides.
