Jindal Pipes: Which Jindal Is Which?
“Jindal” is not one company. Several separate steel firms share the name, and a specification that says only “Jindal” can mean any of them. This guide sorts the pipe brands out, plainly and without favour.
“Jindal” names several unrelated steel companies. Jindal pipe is made mainly by Jindal Pipes Limited (brand Jindal Star, established 1970) and Jindal Industries Pvt. Ltd. (brand Jindal Hissar, established 1972; Hisar plant set up 1980), both to IS:1239 in 15MM to 150MM sizes. Jindal India, Jindal SAW and others are separate firms.

Why “Jindal” Confuses Buyers
The Jindal name runs through a large part of Indian steel because several different family businesses carry it. They descend from the same industrial lineage but grew into separate, independently owned companies, each with its own factories, trademarks and Bureau of Indian Standards licences. When a drawing, a bill of quantities or a purchase order simply says “Jindal pipe”, it names a surname, not a manufacturer — and that gap is where supply disputes begin.
For steel pipe, two of these companies dominate everyday water, gas, fire and light-structural work. Jindal Pipes Limited sells under the brand Jindal Star and has been making pipe since 1970. Jindal Industries Pvt. Ltd. sells under the brand Jindal Hissar; the company was established in 1972 and its Hisar, Haryana plant was set up in 1980. Both make galvanised (GI) and mild-steel (MS) round pipe to IS:1239 in Light, Medium and Heavy classes, so on an ordinary plumbing or fire line either is a genuine, standard-compliant choice.
Beyond those two sit companies whose products are not the same thing at all. Jindal (India) Limited makes galvanised and colour-coated steel and line pipe from West Bengal. Jindal SAW Limited makes large-diameter submerged-arc-welded line pipe, ductile iron pipe and seamless tube. Jindal Tubes makes plastic composite plumbing pipe, not steel. Two further companies, Jindal Tubular USA and Jindal Pipe USA, make large-diameter pipe in the United States and are not sold in India. A buyer who assumes all of these are interchangeable, or that a “Jindal” quote from one is comparable to a “Jindal” quote from another, is comparing different products from different firms.
Commercially, the ambiguity matters most at two moments: when a consultant's approved-makes list is written, and when material is inspected on site. If the specification names a make and a different Jindal arrives, the pipe can be rejected however good it is — because the objection is contractual, not about quality. How to Tell Which Jindal You Have Received
The pipe itself carries the answer. Every genuine length is marked at the mill, and the marking names the maker, the standard and the class. Three things are worth checking before material is accepted.
The brand mark
Jindal Hissar carries the trademark “JINDAL” set in an oval over the map of India, with “HISSAR” beneath, embossed on the wall. Jindal Star carries the Jindal Star brand name, embossed or stencilled along the length.
The ISI mark & licence
Genuine IS:1239 pipe shows the ISI Standard Mark with a licence number. On Jindal Hissar that number is a CM/L reference — IS:1239 pipe is made under CM/L-0458956. A licence number that does not match the maker or the standard is a warning sign.
The class colour band
IS:1239 pipe carries a painted class band — yellow for Light, blue for Medium, red for Heavy. It tells you the class at a glance and should agree with the wall thickness and the test certificate.

Your BOQ Says “Jindal” — What Now?
If the BOQ names a make — “Jindal Star” or “Jindal Hissar” in words — supply exactly that make. An approved-makes list is a contractual clause; substituting even an equal pipe can hold up the running bill at inspection.
If it says only “Jindal” or “Jindal make”, ask the consultant, in writing, which entity is intended. Usually either ISI-marked brand — Jindal Star or Jindal Hissar — satisfies a generic clause, because both are made to the same IS:1239. Getting that confirmation on record before ordering is what prevents a dispute later.
What to request from the supplier: the maker's BIS licence numbers and the mill test certificate for the exact heat, plus the dealership certificate if the specification demands an authorised source. Filed together, these settle an approved-makes query on paper.
What happens at inspection if the wrong Jindal arrives: the inspector checks the marking and the certificate against the specified make. A mismatch is grounds for rejection regardless of the pipe's quality, which is why the make is worth pinning down at the order stage, not the delivery stage.
For IS:1239 Work, It Comes Down to Two
Most enquiries that reach this page are about ordinary water, gas, fire or light-structural pipe — the IS:1239 range in 15MM to 150MM sizes. For that work, six of the eight names above fall away: they either make a different product (large-diameter SAW, ductile iron, plastic) or are not sold in India. What remains is a straight choice between Jindal Star and Jindal Hissar, both ISI-marked to IS:1239, both carrying Light, Medium and Heavy classes, both identical in nominal weight because the standard — not the maker — fixes it.
